At HWPS, the classroom teachers take their grade for a 50 minute LRC session each week. Students are encouraged to return their books each week or they can keep their library book for a fortnight. The LRC will be open before school to return books.
Students learn various aspects of the library including the routines of borrowing, the Picture Story section, Fiction and Non-Fiction books. There is a lot of vocabulary to learn about books. Can you find the front cover, blurb or the spine on a book?
Library sessions also involve Author studies, retelling of stories, sequencing events and expressing or justifying opinions. Older students will study research skills including choosing appropriate resources to complete their unit of works from the classroom. How do you effectively locate information from different sources? How can you correctly reference your source of information?
ICT & Digital Reflections
There are 14 computers for students to use in the LRC. Teachers model teaching strategies and software programs using the Interactive Whiteboard as part of their LRC session. Students are given the opportunity to learn computer skills later used independently in the classroom.
Digital Reflections are completed by all students showing a third aspect to the reporting to parents.
Digital Reflections are completed using a software program called PowerPoint. Students learn to include text boxes, hyperlink work samples, insert photos and clip art, format backgrounds and add text. The Digital Reflection allows students to showcase their ICT (computer) skills and the reflection aspect to their learning. Ask to see the progress of your child's Digital Reflection at the June Parent Teacher Interviews here in the LRC.
