Term 3 in Grades One and Two 2008

During Term 3, the Level 2 students have conducted a negotiated unit on the Olympic Games. The students learnt that in order to become lifelong learners they need to ask questions, find relevant information, sort out the information, know how it links to the real world and present this information in an appropriate format. They learnt these skills through conducting an individual research investigation about the Olympics.
They found out about the Olympics through live telecasts, guest speakers, a mini Olympics and an excursion to the MCG sports gallery, among other events.
MCG excursion

They spent lots of time presenting their investigations which were showcased in an end of unit expo celebration day.

Our writing and reading programs included information texts, relating where possible to our integrated unit about the Olympics.
The students continued to develop an understanding of why we have information books, the key features of information books as well as learning how to locate relevant information. They learnt how to highlight key words and put the information into their own words.

The student’s also wrote and published their own narrative. They focused on character profiles, settings and problem and resolutions.

Our Numeracy program focused on multiplication and division strategies.
The students were grouped according to the Early Years Interview results which highlighted the strategies the students need to develop. The students also developed their understanding of shape including their attributes, symmetry and how to construct and draw many 2D and 3D shapes.
